What is a Renewal of Vows Ceremony?
A renewal of vows ceremony can be a meaningful, touching
and poignant ceremony for you and your children, your family and friends. As a
married couple it is a time to pause and to reflect on where you have been and
where you are going. It is also a wonderful example to set for your children
and grandchildren. Can you imagine a more beautiful scene than children
watching their parents joining hands and hearts as they affirm the magnitude and
strength of their enduring love for each other? Many couples
comment
on how romantic such an occasion as a Renewal of Vows Ceremony felt for them and
how it renewed their faith in and love for each other.
Renewal of Vows ceremonies can be as creative and
personal as you want them to be. You can recreate the magic of the original
wedding ceremony by ‘walking down the aisle’ again (constructed in the setting
that you choose to hold your ceremony in), play your special song, decorate an
Order of Service with a grandchild’s drawing … or the ceremony can be a
simple renewal of vows which holds just as much poignancy. A Renewal of Vows
ceremony can also be a an ideal way to renew the marriage vows exchanged at an
original Registry Office civil wedding service but with a more meaningful
personal ceremony. ![]()
What is most important is that your Renewal of Vows Ceremony is tailor-made and personalised to you, the couple, and your family and friends. Significant anniversaries are especially appropriate times for renewing your commitment and love. But there is no set time, if it feels right, do it! Some couples choose to renew their vows after a particularly difficult crisis in their lives for example, the overcoming of a serious illness or a period of estrangement. Others simply want to make it new again! And others just want to reaffirm the love that has matured and deepened with the passing of years.
What will the ceremony consist of?
The content of your Renewal of Vows Ceremony can be personal to you. The ceremony can accommodate secular beliefs or take on a more spiritual or Pagan emphasis which will be reflected in the content that you choose. You can choose your own poetry or prose, music and contributors to the ceremony. Your ceremony can be formal or more casual and you can have the choice of a secular or religious ceremony. Your Celebrant will usually make an initial visit to discuss your wishes and structure the ceremony around these. Your Celebrant will then work with you in creating a service especially to match your requirements. Your Celebrant will usually encourage you to create your own vows or standardised, more formal vows can be exchanged.
Where can we hold our
Renewal of Vows Ceremony?
Renewal of Vows Ceremonies can be held at any location of your choosing. Many couples will hold the ceremony at their home, perhaps in the garden on a summer’s afternoon, or ceremonies can be held in more formal settings such as a local hotel or village hall.

I
wrote your name in the sky,
but the wind blew it away.
I wrote your name in the sand,
but the waves washed it away.
I wrote your name in my heart,
and forever it will stay.
